Nutmeg and mace both originate from the nutmeg tree, an evergreen originally native to the Spice Islands (Moluccas). The tree produces large seeds, and the kernels inside the seed are ground to form nutmeg, while the fine covering over the kernel is grated for the spice, mace. Sourced from Sri Lanka, nutmeg has a warm, strong flavor often used in spiced desserts, while mace is a lighter, more delicate spice.
